Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, Washington University Medical Center, is the larger hospital in Missouri and a private sector employer in the St. Louis area.


Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital in St. Louis merged in 1996 to become Barnes-Jewish Hospital, each with a rich tradition of excellence.


Barnes Hospital was founded in 1941 and became one of the first medical teaching centres in the United States, while Jewish Hospital was established in 1902 to care for the growing immigrant population in St. Louis.


The hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine and has a medical staff of 1,800, including a number of doctors who are considered "American physicians", supported by residents, interns and fellows, in addition to nurses, technicians and other healthcare staff.


In recognition of its excellent care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the only adult hospital in Missouri to be accredited as a "Magnet Hospital" by the American Nursing Credentialing Center. Diseases treated Centre for Cardiac Medicine and Surgery
Barnes-Jewish Washington University Heart and Vascular Center is ranked 12th in the 2018-19 U.S. Hospitals - Cardiology by U.S. News and World Report.

From prevention to diagnosis to treatment, the Barnes-Jewish Washington University Heart and Vascular Center has the technology, staff and expertise to provide complete cardiac care, with board-certified cardiologists recognized as leaders in cardiovascular care. The Center has pioneered many procedures, from ablation therapy to valve repair and replacement, and long-lasting implantation of ventricular assist devices. Patients here have been among the first to benefit from advanced angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting, valvuloplasty and heart transplantation.


Modern imaging technology, minimally invasive techniques and strong basic research provide patients with newer treatment options and a level of care not available elsewhere. The centre sees more than 2,000 cardiac patients each month, has performed 500 heart transplants since 1985, has successfully implanted more than 300 left ventricular assist devices, and cardiologists perform more than 4,000 cardiac catheterisations and 1,250 interventions each year.

The Stedman Cancer Center is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community service, and is one of Missouri's comprehensive cancer centres designated by the National Cancer Institute and members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Specialist oncologists, surgeons, research scientists, nurses, radiologists and cancer experts work together in multidisciplinary teams to develop cutting-edge techniques to decode common and rare cancers and make treatment safer and more effective.


With a dedicated staff of more than 350 Washington University scientists and physicians, Stedman cares for more than 800 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. A range of advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment is used for patients with all types of cancer, many of whom are given advanced drug treatments at the centre.

The Neuroscience Centre at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, is ranked seventh in the 2018-19 U.S. Hospitals - Neurology by U.S. News and World Report.


The mission of the Department of Neurology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is to provide outstanding clinical care, train future leading neurologists and scientists, and be an international leader in clinical and basic research on neurological disorders. Its goal is to apply scientific research and discoveries from basic research to clinical practice to improve the lives of patients.

Specialised projects include sleep studies, electroencephalography and electromyography. a PET scanner, advanced brain imaging technology was created and developed in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, University of Washington, one of the larger and more sophisticated units in the United States.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital's neurosurgical services include five neurosurgical operating rooms specially equipped to perform neurological surgical treatments including polytrauma, and the hospital's 20-bed neurological intensive care unit ensures that patients can be professionally cared for by doctors, nurses and other staff following neurosurgical procedures. The neurosurgeons work in an interdisciplinary environment that brings together neurologists, neurological radiologists, clinical oncologists, radiation oncologists and a specialist neurosurgical anaesthetic team who can treat the full range of neurological disorders.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital's Nephrology Department was ranked 14th in the 2018-19 U.S. Hospitals - Nephrology by U.S. News and World Report.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, nearly one in nine adults in the United States is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease each year. Barnes-Jewish Hospital performed haemodialysis in 1968 and is one of the providers of dialysis services in the United States. The hospital's surgeons performed kidney transplants in 1963 and now perform approximately 200 kidney transplants each year.


The medical staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is dedicated to performing haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and surgical procedures for patients with kidney failure. They ensure that adequate attention is given to both the specific problems of patients with renal failure and to surgical problems.
