Duke University Hospital conceptually integrates the Duke University Health System, the Duke University School of Medicine and the Duke University School of Nursing. The Center is North Carolina's premier kidney care centre, offering newer treatments for chronic kidney disease and kidney dysfunction in adults and children, with specialists who are leaders in innovative clinical research making significant contributions to advances in the treatment of kidney disease.


The centre treats all types of kidney disease, often admitting patients with end-stage renal disease, vasculitis, glomerulonephritis, HIV-associated kidney disease, hereditary kidney disease, electrolyte disorders and helping women manage chronic kidney disease during pregnancy. There is an active research team and medical team, as well as specialist nursing staff to provide quality care for patients with kidney disease. For patients with chronic kidney disease, specialists utilise newer treatments to slow its progression while combating the underlying causes of the disease, while newer inpatient, outpatient and home dialysis options are available for patients who have developed kidney failure, as well as kidney transplants.

Disease Management Gynecology Centre
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Duke University Medical Centre provides comprehensive care for all stages of the life cycle, from adolescence and childbirth to menopause and beyond, offering a full range of health management services for the screening and treatment of women's health problems. The Department of Urology at Duke University Medical Center is ranked 12th in "2018-19 U.S. Hospitals - Urology" by U.S. News and World Report.

It treats and manages urological tumours, gynaecological and urinary disorders, male infertility, sexual dysfunction, kidney stones and urological disorders using novel and effective methods recognized in the United States and around the world. Its doctors are unanimously recognised for their experience and expertise, and the minimally invasive surgical techniques they have developed are now considered the gold standard for the removal of kidney stones.

With an emphasis on post-operative recovery, the department is one of the few centres in the United States with a programme that emphasises post-operative recovery, with the aim of maintaining health and discharging patients as soon as possible, with the aim of shortening hospital stays, reducing post-operative complications and monitoring patients' needs for painkillers and digestive fluid levels. Individualised care is a key feature, taking age and lifestyle into account to develop care plans for better patient care.

As one of the country's leading ophthalmology centres, Duke University Eye Centre treats more than 165,000 people each year and provides all ranges of eye care. Specialists here have advanced training and years of experience in treating keratoconus, retinopathy, glaucoma, eye cancer and other eye diseases. They use newer diagnostic, medical and surgical breakthroughs, and researchers are often involved in applying new discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic. At the Duke Eye Centre, patients receive timely and effective treatment at the earliest possible stage to prevent or halt the progression of blinding eye disease.

The Department of Orthopaedics at Duke University Medical Center is ranked 11th in the 2018-19 U.S. Hospitals - Orthopaedics by U.S. News and World Report.


The centre offers nationally recognized specialists and advanced technology to meet the orthopaedic needs of patients and is committed to providing quality care for patients with arthritis pain, sprains and strains, tendon or ligament injuries, tendonitis, fractures, and dislocations in a safe and caring environment. Duke has pioneered several surgical breakthroughs, including new fracture repairs and advanced surgical techniques, and has helped develop commonly used ankle, knee and elbow repairs.


The centre uses a team approach, with orthopaedic surgeons, surgeons, sports medicine specialists, non-surgical spine specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and physiotherapists working together to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

The centre has advanced medical records technology that allows patients to check test results, make appointments, ask for follow-up prescriptions and send messages to doctors from any web-based device on Duke's portal. In addition, the technology also allows anyone on the care team to securely access the patient's health information and use it to adjust care plans.

The respiratory unit at Duke University Hospital was ranked fifth in the 2016-17 U.S. Hospitals - Respiratory by U.S. News and World Report.

With more treatment options than ever before, Duke is also one of the first centres in the US to establish a pulmonary rehabilitation programme, using advanced treatments and newer technologies, and registering clinical trials each year to provide patients with pulmonary disease with treatments not yet available elsewhere.
