About the University of Chicago Medical Center


The University of Chicago Medical Center is one of the nation's leading academic medical institutions. The University of Chicago, where it is located, has been among the top ten universities in the world for many years, has produced 92 Nobel Prize winners, including 12 in physiology or medicine, and has been at the forefront of global healthcare.

The Centre was founded in 1927 and, together with the Pritzker School of Medicine and the University of Chicago Division of Biological Sciences, forms the University of Chicago Health System, which integrates research, teaching and clinical practice.

The Centre has 1,300 attending physicians, more than 800 of whom work at the Pritzker School of Medicine, 1,130 residents and fellows, more than 2,500 nurses and 11,400 staff. The envy of other hospitals is the fact that 12 Nobel Prize winners in physiology or medicine have worked together here.



Patient safety ranks in the top 0.7% nationally
Patient safety is certainly an important indicator of the quality of care and attention provided by a healthcare organisation. As one of the top 0.7% of hospitals in the country for patient safety, the University of Chicago Medical Center has received 17 consecutive "A" ratings for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group. The Centre has also received early magnetic recognition as a hospital of excellence in patient care.

The U.S. News & World Report, one of the three major weekly news magazines in the United States, publishes an annual honor roll of U.S. hospital rankings, and the University of Chicago Medical Center has been on the list for several years and has been ranked nationally in several specialties each year. 2020-2021 listings are as follows.
